Another year, another muddy pilgrimage to Donington Park for Download Festival, the UK's biggest celebration of rock, metal and alternative music. Held at the Leicestershire racetrack that once hosted the legendary Monsters of Rock festivals, Download once again brought together some of the biggest names in music, with Limp Bizkit headlining Friday, Guns N' Roses taking the top spot on Saturday and Linkin Park closing out the weekend on Sunday.

As always, Download wasn't afraid to throw a few curveballs into the line-up. Hip-hop legends Cypress Hill, Pendulum, Scooter and somehow, Five all found themselves on the bill. Only at Download could you hear people debating whether to watch a metal-core band or relive a school disco.

The weather did its absolute best to remind everyone that this was still Download. Rain battered the site throughout the early part of the week and, despite everyone's best efforts, the campsites quickly started resembling a very expensive mud spa. It also became apparent fairly quickly that this year's festival was... popular. Campsites were filling up at a pace most regular Downloaders weren't used to seeing. 

By Thursday, space was already becoming a premium and then came the infamous gazebo announcement. Officially it was about safety and weather conditions. Unofficially, many people suddenly became experts in campsite urban planning and took their concerns straight to social media. Gazebo gate was born, and I suspect will live on in Download lore for years to come.Friday began with Scene Queen, who wasted absolutely no time getting Download warmed up. Between the infectious energy, crowd interaction and what felt like an endless number of twerkle pits breaking out across the field.Lakeview followed, bringing a welcome dose of country-rock that felt surprisingly at home amongst the heavier acts on the bill. Pendulum were one of the most anticipated sets of the weekend and absolutely delivered. One of the most unique sounds Download had to offer and seeing such a huge crowd bouncing along proved they were exactly where they belonged. Electric Callboy continued their mission of turning every festival appearance into the world's biggest party and I left very battered and bruised. Limp Bizkit closed out the night and reminded everyone exactly why they're still headline material. Donington transformed into one giant singalong as thousands of people temporarily forgot their age and transported themselves straight back to the early 2000s.Fred Durst remains one of the most entertaining frontmen in rock music. Whether he was winding up the crowd, joking between songs or simply soaking in the atmosphere, he had Donington in the palm of his hand all night.When the end came, the field was covered in exhausted fans, a sea of red snapbacks and people trying to remember where they had left their friends. In other words, a successful Limp Bizkit headline set.

Saturday started with Thornhill, who somehow managed to get a respectable crowd together at 11am. Admittedly, I was contributing to that crowd while eating a bacon butty which felt like the correct way to start a Download morning. Despite the early slot, Thornhill sounded fantastic and proved that maybe not everyone was fully awake yet but apparently plenty of people were willing to be Horny for Thorny at breakfast time. BABYMETAL drew one of the biggest crowds and reminded everyone why they're such a staple of the Download line-up. Thankfully there was no repeat of Drownload this time around and the band finally got to give Donington the full performance it had been waiting for. One of the standout moments of Saturday for me came courtesy of As Everything Unfolds. Originally scheduled to play the Dogtooth Stage, a knock-on scheduling issue elsewhere saw them moved to the larger Opus Stage and given an earlier slot. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, with the band making the most of the bigger platform and delivering one of my favourite performances of the weekend.

Architects delivered one of the most talked-about sets of the weekend and honestly it felt like they should have been on the Apex Stage rather than Opus with a constant stream of crowd surfers and some particularly enthusiastic pit activity forcing repeated pauses throughout the performance. Despite the interruptions, Architects still managed to remind everyone why they're one of the biggest bands in British metal. When the music was flowing, the crowd responded with huge chants, enormous pits and the kind of energy that has helped elevate the band to headline status around the world.Sunday started with Spitting Glass, who were the perfect way to shake off the previous night's headline-induced exhaustion. Despite the early slot, they brought plenty of energy and drew a solid crowd, with fans packing in to support one of the UK's most promising up-and-coming heavy bands. The festival timetable wasn't particularly interested in my fitness levels, meaning I had to do a rapid cross-site dash midset of The Plot In You to make it in time for Magnolia Park. The Plot In You delivered one of the strongest sets of the day, with a huge crowd packed in from the very beginning. Magnolia Park kept the energy going and proved exactly why they've become one of the fastest-rising names in the alternative scene.Kublai Khan TX ensured everyone was suitably bruised before the evening sets began and Day To Remember brought their usual mix of massive choruses, breakdowns and crowd-pleasing anthems. As expected, the band didn't do things by halves, treating the Donington crowd to plenty of pyro and enough confetti to make it look like someone had accidentally scheduled New Year's Eve six months early.

Closing Download is never an easy task, but Linkin Park delivered a genuinely special headline set. Emotional, nostalgic and powerful in equal measure, it felt like the perfect way to end the weekend. A huge part of that success belongs to Emily Armstrong. Stepping into a role that many people considered impossible following the loss of Chester Bennington was always going to bring scrutiny, but she owned the stage from start to finish. The performance was also a landmark moment for Download Festival, with Emily becoming the first female fronted artist to headline the festival's main stage. It felt fitting that such a historic milestone came during a set that celebrated both Linkin Park's past and its future.

One thing that surprised me over the weekend was the complete lack of guest appearances. With so many bands on the line-up having collaborated with each other, I was convinced we'd get at least one surprise cameo somewhere. Whether it was a guest vocalist popping up for a chorus, an impromptu feature during a headline set or even just a quick appearance for the fans, it never happened. While the bands always get the headlines, I want to take a moment to thank the Accessible Camping team.We were informed that a number of volunteers unfortunately never made it to the festival, which meant many of the remaining team members ended up working 12-hour shifts throughout a cold, wet and exhausting week from Wednesday through to Sunday.Despite that, every interaction we had was met with kindness, patience and a genuine willingness to help. Whether it was checking in on campers, constantly supplying hot water, answering questions or even helping guests set up tents in the rain, they consistently went above and beyond to make people feel comfortable and supported.

Accessible Camping is one of the reasons Download remains such a special festival for so many people, and every member of that team deserves recognition for the effort they put in this year. Food-wise, Download once again did its best to ensure I spent the equivalent of a small mortgage payment. My highlights included Big Mouth Gyoza, Pukka Pies, Anna Mae's Mac & Cheese, Eat Greek and a hog roast from The Barn in RIP where I also made the entirely sensible decision to spend nearly £20 on three Coca-Colas. On the bright side, we did get to keep the plastic Barn cups, which I'm sure will be a treasured family heirloom for generations to come (RIP to my bank account) Elsewhere around site, the ferris wheel once again offered incredible views across Donington.
